Looking Back on an Afternoon with Carol Feller

Recently This is Knit hosted Irish knitwear designer, Carol Feller for an afternoon of knitting and chatting about pattern design and her latest yarn Nua Worsted.

Carol started off by introducing us all to Nua Worsted and it’s fabulous colourways and new colour palette. The choices range from deep greens to soft pink and moody blues all with the textured effect of the linen/merino/yak blend that we have come to love in the original Nua.

Yarn Tasting

To get started everyone got to try some Nua on their needles and experience the yarn for themselves. We agree that you can’t really tell what a yarn is like you need to experience it for yourself. What a great opportunity it was to see how it behaves with cables and textured stitches!

Carol believes that once you have a feel for a yarn you can the decide how best to use it. We often get caught up in the wonderful colours that are available but the structure of the yarn, how it behaves with a variety of stitches tells you whether you want a full garment or if you just want to wrap yourself in a soft, draping shawl.

Samples & Yarn Discussion

Carol then took us through her carefully chosen samples with a special nod to her previous patterns Landscape WavesRibosomeCaelius, and Quirinalis – all would work especially well in Nua Worsted. An interesting part of Carol’s talk was on substituting yarn in patterns and why Nua worsted was suited to these particular patterns and, of course, the importance of swatching!

Carol also brought her latest release the Liscannor Cowl in the Cerebellum colour with its intriguing cables, and options for a small or large cowl. We then took a closer look at her Summer KAL cardigan: Spraoi.

Social

By far everyone’s favourite part was experiencing the samples for themselves, trying them on, discussing their project choices – all over a cuppa. The atmosphere was relaxed and friendly, and it was wonderful to catch up with so many of you.

If you missed out on Carol’s talk there are some samples here in the shop now that you can see up close – and Nua Worsted is available instore and online here. You can also take part in Carol’s upcoming knit-along, Spraoi, here.
