Start Spinning

We had an almost tropical afternoon on the Powerscourt balcony yesterday, as the sun was out in force :D The tropical theme was picked up nicely by R’s fibre (a mixed batt with sparkly angelina from the ever-talented Laura Hogan).

Drop spindles abounded, with D and Dee, showing us how it’s done on the top whorl version:

And E was using her gorgeous homemade bottom whorl spindle with her fibre. We’re begging her to make more for the shop!

My wheel had it’s second outing at a Spin In and I finished spinning singles from a BFL Laura Hogan Top. Next stop: adventures in plying!

Spin In Collage

Thoughts are very definitely turning to autumn around here, with the chill in the air and knitters-on-Twitter discussing what hat patterns to make for the coming cold days…

It really is the season for fibre crafts and, if you are interested in taking up something new, why not come along to the Dublin Spin this Sunday? There’ll be spindles and wheels a-plenty and fabulous fibre to fondle!

The shop will also be back to Sunday trading from this week (after our late summer Sunday breaks) and we’ll be offering double loyalty card stamps on spinning supplies to celebrate!

Hope to see you there :D

Pretty Pictures

If you’re attending our Yarn Tasting evening on Thursday 9th September then we have a very special additional treat for you, courtesy of Julie Matkin (Rav name: Elven) and Siobhan Cottell (Rav name: Iontach). Both of these talented ladies happen to take *very* pretty pictures of finished knit and crochet projects and they have kindly offered to host a “photo booth” on the night.

This is how it will work:

You are welcome to bring one or two of your finished projects along to be photographed and then Julie or Siobhan will take your details and email you on your photos after the event. You can then use these pictures on your blog on Ravelry project page, or just to brag about how talented you are to friends/relatives/neighbours/strangers on the street!

The girls will also be handing out a little general guide to getting the best project pictures on your own camera at home. This service is being offered free of charge but a small donation to Age Action would be welcome.

We are hoping everyone who took part in the summer Annis KAL will bring along their finished shawls. We would love to put together a collage for proud display on the website :D

Yarn Tasting 2010

You can now sign up to attend Yarn Tasting 2010 :D

A space at the event will cost €20 and this will entitle you to sample everything on offer on the night. The list is currently running to 30 samples +

When the €20 is paid we will take your name and contact details so we can keep everyone updated with news on the event. You will then collect your ticket on the night, which will contain a list of all the products on tasting. Your ticket will be checked off each time you collect a sample.

We’ll have to limit the places available and also finish taking sign ups on Monday 6th September. This will allow us to make sure there is a sample of each product for everyone and to plan seating, refreshments and other goodies!

You can book to attend in person, by phone (using laser or credit card) or via the internet-wonders of Paypal (just drop us an email and we’ll send you a Paypal form)…

We’re celebrating the upcoming weekend of fibre fun with some great deals!

  • Rowan Revive and Cushendale Mohair Boucle are now just €4 a ball…
  • There’s a squishy 15% off Debbie Bliss Amalfi, Rowan Big Wool, Brown Sheep Burlyspun, Rowan Cocoon, Debbie Bliss Como, Brown Sheep Cotton Fleece, DB Luxury Tweed Chunky, Malabrigo Merino Worsted, Noro Silk Garden Sock and Noro Taiyo… (phew!)
  • And with Louisa visiting we are offering a great 10% across her full range of yarns :)
  • These deals are available as of right now and will run until Sunday at 4pm.

    Sampling Yarn

If you are free this Saturday the 24th July at 5.15pm why not pop along to TIK for a FREE talk from Louisa Harding?

Louisa will have samples of her new Autumn/Winter yarns with her and a wonderful selection of finished garments on display. She will be signing books and will be happy to answer any questions you may have about her yarns and her designs.

So if you can’t make the workshop itself this will be a great opportunity to meet Louisa and get together with other knitters. Refreshment of the red and white variety will be provided – just the thing to accompany a bit of yarn tasting!

Our Annis KAL is progressing nicely over on Ravelry and, chez TIK, both Dixie and Jacqui have finished and blocked theirs. Funnily enough they knit them out of exactly the same yarn, in exactly the same colourway, but when it was Hedgehog Fibre’s Silk Lace in the evocatively named “Damp” shade who could blame them?

Dixie added beads to hers, beautiful little silver-lined ones, and the result is stunning:

    Dixie Annis

And Jacqui went the un-adorned route and let her hard-won finished object take centre stage… just look at those Nupps!

    Jacqui Annis

Having two (pretty much) exactly the same projects, knitted from exactly the same yarn, gave us the perfect opportunity to take these pictures…

    Comparison 1

    Comparison 2

Just look at the difference in size! Dixie changed needle sizes to get a firmer looking fabric in her FO and the effect is dramatic. One is very much a decorative scarf and the other is a decent shawlette. Just goes to show people… size does matter ;)

Louisa will be teaching a full day workshop on Saturday the 24th of July at This Is Knit on playing with the colours and textures of different yarns within a piece that will be transformed into a glamorous knitted purse. Throughout the day Louisa will show you how to experiment with these yarns to achieve unique and attractive results in your knitting.

Louisa will also explain and demonstrate how to make twisted cords which act as the purse closure. This fun workshop will be a great experience for knitters of all skill levels.

The workshop times will be 10.00-12.30 with an hour for lunch and then 1.30-4.30 for the afternoon session.

Materials are included in the workshop fee. Participants will just need to bring 4mm, 5mm and 6mm needles.

Tea/coffee and biscuits are also included for the morning and afternoon sessions. Our new neighbours at the “Pepper Pot” cafe will have a special lunch time offer for workshop participants.

If you’ve never met Louisa before then you are in for a treat – she’s a delight to spend time with and her enthusiasm for her craft really shines though. She will be bringing along some of her new yarns to preview for Autumn Winter 2010 and she’ll also have finished garments with her to show how they knit up and for people to try on. This is a day not to be missed :)

The cost for the day is €75. A €40 deposit will be taken at the time of booking. To book phone us on 01-6709981 or contact us by email.

    WWKIP

Join us for a TIK World Wide Knit in Public Event on Sat 19th June from 12.30pm

    Hatometer

There’s going to be a fab raffle on the day for prizes that include fruity coloured yarn, fruity needles and a month’s supply of very fruity smoothies! Each hat donated on the day will be exchanged for one ticket in the draw.

If you would like more information on the “Big Knit” then you can click here for details.

Looking forward to seeing you on the 19th!

I had the absolute pleasure of taking Annie’s Combination Knitting Workshop last Sunday. There’s always so much more to learn in this wonderful world of knitting and Annie shared her wisdom and advice on plenty of topics…

    Annie's Workshop

Combination Knitting was a hit, as everyone agreed that their rib stitches in particular looked a lot neater than usual. I also think I made the crispest non-gappy-looking cable of my knitting career on Sunday!

We squeezed a lot of learning into two hours as Annie showed us her method of cabling without a cable needle which included such nuggets as “pinch, pull and poke” :D

And I’m already trying out a new and unusual increase method in my latest All Seasons Cardi – it’s quick and neat and I’m loving it!

The feedback from the workshop has been great and I hope everyone is enjoying using their new skills.

Annie is continuing her travels in Ireland for a few more weeks and you can check in on her progress over on her blog. She’s had a bit of drama so far so if you want to send her good Irish knitter vibes I am sure they would be appreciated :)
