Mystery Object Revealed!

And the why?

Why, for the Electric Picnic of course!

Once again, knitting will feature at the festival and this time around we are going to be in the very chilled Body & Soul area. We will be running “learn to knit” workshops and also having an open “sit and knit” area for anyone who wants to just do a few stitches and escape the festival madness for a while. We are pencilled in to occupy a space in the Chill Out Tent but, if we can bring along a decent size gazebo or marquee of our own then they will give us some dedicated space. Anyone have one spare?!?!

Wherever we end up though we would like to decorate it with some quirky knitted items and these fish seem just the trick. If you have 15 mins and some scrap yarn then we will happily take as many of these in from volunteer knitters as possible. It’s all about making an impact! We will also take in knitted flowers as (if the sun graces us with its presence) we would also like to have a knitted flower garden area outside the marquee. Aquarium inside, flower garden outside… make sense? No? Does it have to? 😉

Edit: Credit for this particular bunch o’ fishes goes to Mary L. Thanks Mary!

Mystery Object…

Got leftovers?

Try this… (just for a bit of fun!)**

Work on a needle which is half a size down from the needle size recommended on the label.

Instructions for Straight Needles:

(Make Two Pieces Exactly the Same)

Cast on 15 sts.

Row 1: K1, SSK, work to 3 sts before end the row, K2tog, K1

Row 2: Purl all sts

Repeat Row 1 & 2 until 7 sts rem

Now…

Row 1: K1, M1, work until 1 st remains on left needle, M1, K1

Row 2: Purl all sts

Repeat Row 1 & 2 until you have 15sts

Work 4 rows of stocking st

Repeat Row 1 (inc Row) … 17sts

Work 4 rows of stocking st

Now begin to decrease as before:

Row 1: K1, SSK, work to 3 sts before end the row, K2tog, K1

Row 2: Purl all sts

Rep Row 1 & 2 until you have 9 sts

Next Row: K1, SSK, work to 3 sts before end the row, K2tog, K1

Next Row: P1, P2tog, work to 3 sts before the end of the row, P2tog, P1 (5sts rem)

Make another piece exactly the same and then sew the two pieces together, leaving a gap to add filling and then closing up the piece completely.

Strategically place an embroidered french knot on either side (it should be fairly obvious at this point where they go!)

Admire your whimsical creation :)

Instructions for Magic Loop (easily adapted for DPNs):

Using Judy’s Magic Cast On, Cast on 15 sts onto each needle (30 sts in total)

Rnd 1: K1, SSK, work to 3 sts before end of 1st needle, K2tog, K1 THEN K1, SSK, work to 3 sts before end of 2nd needle, K2tog, K1

Rnd 2: Knit all sts

Repeat Rnd 1 & 2 until you have 7 sts on each needle (14 sts in total)

Now…

Rnd 1: K1, M1, work until 1 st is left on 1st needle, M1, K1 THEN K1, M1, work until 1 st is left on 1st needle, M1, K1

Rnd 2: Knit all sts

Repeat Rnd 1 & 2 until you have 15sts on each needle (30 sts in total)

Work three knit rounds.

Repeat Rnd 1 (inc rnd) … 17sts on each needle (34 sts in total)

Work three knit rounds

Now begin to decrease as before:

Rnd 1: K1, SSK, work to 3 sts before end of 1st needle, K2tog, K1 THEN K1, SSK, work to 3 sts before end of 2nd needle, K2tog, K1

Rnd 2: Knit all sts

Rep Rnd 1 & 2 until you have 9 sts on each needle (18 sts in total)

Now repeat Rnd 1 only until you have 5 sts on each needle (10 sts in total)

Add “filling”… don’t want to give too much away here!

You will then need to graft the remaining 10 sts together to create a seamless finish.

Strategically place an embroidered french knot on either side (it should be fairly obvious at this point where they go!)

Admire your whimsical creation :)

**There is, in fact, a point to all this as we would like to gather a collection of these finished objects for a project and we thought this would be a fun way to do it. Some of you know already what this mystery object is and more of you will be able to guess just from reading the instructions. If you know can you hold off in the comments for a few days just to preserve some mystery? Thanks! :)
